On the last Saturday
in April Kingston Chase celebrated Earth Day! Thanks to the many neighbors who
came and planted, ate and drank, weeded, brought plants from their gardens to
share, came and took those plants, entered the raffle, and visited with their
neighbors and friends.
Several families
learned about using kitchen scraps in their compost, and took home a
make-it-yourself kitchen compost bucket. Congratulations to Rose
Maletesta for winning the 90 gallon composter!
Thanks to the kids
who came and took the Recycling Imagination Challenge. Did you know
that an egg carton makes a good coin or earring holder? Or a good planter to
start seeds? They also handed out doggie treats to four-legged visitors,
played with
Coco the rabbit, munched on goodies, and weeded in the garden Special thanks to
Clara Hampson, Ginny and Carine Threlkeld, and Scout
and Shannon McClain. Special congrats to Scout for
winning the Young Volunteer door prize, a butterfly rearing
habitat!
Special thanks to
Betsy Kiker and Katie Pendleton for all of the
hard work they did before and during the event to make it a success. It is such
a pleasure working with you! Thanks to their efforts, there are now four
beautiful Columbine plants in the garden. You may read about these native spring
bloomers in the May Crier, or visit our blog at kcconservation.blogspot.com. And
look for new plant identification markers coming soon to the
garden!
Footnote: Just prior
to the Earth Day Celebration a bluebird was seen perching on one of the bluebird
houses raised by Boy Scout Troop 1570 (under the direction of Eagle Scout
candidate Fletcher Phillips). Way to go Scouts!
